Youngstown -- The Youngstown State athletic department will partner with the YSU Student Government Association and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in sponsoring an event called “Paint Beeghly Red” in conjunction with the YSU basketball doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 2.
The event will feature giveaways, contests, a pizza party and the chance to win one of 20 pairs of tickets to Jerry Seinfeld’s Youngstown performance for YSU students.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to get a large number of students at one of our events,” Executive Director of Athletics Ron Strollo said. “As student activity continues to grow on campus with the wellness center and the Courtyard apartments, this is an avenue to increase interest in our athletic programs and have our student body rally around our basketball teams.”
SGA President Bob McGovern echoed Strollo’s excitement.
“SGA’s ad-hoc committee on student athletics has been working hard to see things like this through,” SGA President Bob McGovern said. “We hope that this event will encourage more people to attend YSU sporting events in the future.”
All attendees are encouraged to participate in the event by wearing red, but only students who show a valid YSU ID will be eligible for the contests and giveaways.

Humphrey Named Player of the Week For Second Time
Monday, January 9 2006
Courtesy of:
Indianapolis, Ind. – For the second time this season, Youngstown State junior guard Quin Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) has been named the Horizon League's Player of the Week, Robert Hester, the Director of Communications for the conference office announced on Monday.
Humphrey, who ended last week with a career-high 33 points at UIC, maintained his high level of play in three games for this week's selection period averaging 27 points and seven rebounds per contest.
He helped led the Penguins to their first Horizon League road win since January 2004 on Monday, when YSU beat Loyola, 84-76. In Monday’s win against the Ramblers, he scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
On Thursday, he scored 31 points in just 34 minutes as the Penguins beat UW-Green Bay 95-70. The victory over the Phoenix was YSU’s biggest margin of victory since joining the Horizon League in 2001-02 and largest in a conference game since January 1988.
On Saturday, Humphrey almost willed a tired Penguin team who was playing its fourth game in eight days at its fourth different venue to a victory at Detroit where YSU has never won. He scored 18 points, including the team’s final eight to almost pull out the win over the Titans.
In helping YSU post a 2-1 week, he was an impressive 30-of-44 from the field (68.2 percent), 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) from 3-point range and 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
Entering the week, Humphrey had scored a career-high 33 points against UIC and with his efforts against Loyola and UW-Green Bay became just the fourth player in school history to score more than 30 points in three consecutive games and first since February 1978. In Horizon League play he is averaging 28.5 points through the first four games and he ranks in the top 25 in the country in points per game overall with 21.2.
