YSU Men’s Basketball to Host Eastern Kentucky in O’Reilly’s ESPNU BracketBuster

Youngstown – The Youngstown State men’s basketball team (9-13) will host Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Kentucky (11-9) in the 2007 O’Reilly’s ESPNU BracketBuster, Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Beeghly Center and is part of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader. Game time is yet to be determined.

The Penguins and Colonels have met 15 times previously in the 1980s when YSU was a member of the OVC, but have not played each other since the 1987-88 season. Eastern Kentucky owns a slim 8-7 advantage in the all-time series. Youngstown State, however, owns a 4-3 record against Eastern Kentucky in games played at the Beeghly Center.

Sophomore Mike Rose leads the Colonels with 15.9 points per game while senior Julian Mascoll and freshman Adam Leonard boast 12.5 and 11.3 scoring averages, respectively.

YSU returns home to play host to 11th-ranked and Horizon League leader Butler on Wednesday night. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
 
Humphrey Pours In 23 As Guins Fall at Loyola

Chicago, Ill. – Senior guard Quin Humphrey scored 23 points and Keston Roberts finished with 18, but a rough first half proved to be too much to overcome as the Youngstown State men’s basketball team suffered an 80-68 loss to Loyola at the Gentile Center on Monday night.

Loyola scorched the nets making 20-of-32 attempts in the first half for a 62.5 percentage. YSU made just 10-of-33 attempts for a percentage of 30.3 and saw itself on the short end of a 44-24 deficit at the break.

In the second half, the Penguins made a surge cutting a 24-point deficit to 12 at the final margin.

The Penguins fall to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in the Horizon League. The moved Loyola into third place in the league standings at 14-9 overall and 5-5.

YSU never led in the contest and trailed 28-21 at the 5:37 mark of the first half. But Loyola scored 10 straight points, including two 3-pointers by Blake Schilb, over the course of the next three minutes to take control of the contest. In the final 5:37 of the first half, Loyola outscored the Guins 16-3.

Schilb scored a season-high 32 points to lead the Ramblers while Majak Kou scored 18, including 15 in the first half.

Sophomore forward Jack Liles scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Humphrey was 8-of-21 from the field, converting three 3-pointers.

In the second half Loyola shot 40.7 percent to finish at a 52.5 percent clip (31-of-59) for the game. Youngstown State improved drastically in the second half making 43.2 percent and finished at 37.1 percent (26-of-70) for the game. The 70 attempts were a season high.

YSU returns home to play host to 11th-ranked and Horizon League leader Butler on Wednesday night. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
 
Humphrey Cracks Scoring Top 10

Dayton, Ohio – Senior guard Quin Humphrey scored 22 points to become one the top 10 scorers in Youngstown State men’s basketball history, but it wasn’t enough as the Penguins suffered a 62-49 loss to Wright State at the Nutter Center on Wednesday night.

Humphrey now has 1,494 points and on the night he moved ahead of Bruce Alexander for the No. 10 spot in school history. Against the Raiders, he was 8-of-18 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to finish with a game-high 22.

The Penguins dropped to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in the Horizon League while Wright State improves to 13-8 and 6-2.

Turnovers hurt YSU the entire contest. Youngstown State had 16 for the game, including nine in the second half, which led to a 19-6 margin for the Raiders – 10-2 in the second stanza.

The Penguins were able to make a run in the second half to pull within 34-28 early in the half, but after trailing 34-23 at halftime, that was as close as they would get.

The Raiders built a 14-point cushion at 48-34 and 50-36 by the 10-minute mark, but YSU was able to get within 54-47 with 6:10 left. But turnovers on two consecutive possessions doomed any Guin comeback hopes.

For the game, YSU shot 38.3 percent making 18-of-47 shots while Wright State shot 49.1 percent converting 26-of-53 field-goal opportunities.

WSU freshman Todd Brown had 17 points while league-leading scorer DaShaun Wood had 17 points and seven assists. Keston Roberts was the only other Penguin to reach double figures scoring 10.
YSU returns to the court on Monday night to take on Loyola in Chicago.
 
 
Late Run, Three in Double Figures Pace YSU to 68-63 Win Over Cleveland State

Youngstown -- Youngstown State scored six straight points in the final minute and Quin Humphrey had his third double-double of the season in the Penguins' 68-63 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday at the Beeghly Center.
Humphrey finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Keston Roberts scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half for the Penguins, who improved to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League.
John Barber added a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
The Penguins held a 57-50 advantage with 5:42 remaining before Cleveland State went on an 8-2 run to get within one after back-to-back treys from Bahaadar Russell.
Humphrey answered with a 3 with 1:01 remaining, but Raheem Moss hit another 3 for the Vikings to keep the margin at one.
That's when two Byron Davis free throws with 40 seconds remaining keyed a 6-0 run for YSU. Russell missed a potential tying trey, and Humphrey hit two free throws and had an assist on a breakaway Barber dunk to make the score 68-61.
Joe Davis added two free throws for the final tally.
J'Nathan Bullock led four Vikings in double figures with 18 points while Moss had 14, Davis had 12 and Russell finished with 11. The Vikings fell to 7-14 and 1-7.
The Penguins shot 40.7 percent from the floor and made 8-of-20 from behind the arc while Cleveland State made 37.3 percent. The Vikings shot 7-of-24 from behind the arc despite hitting three of its final four.
Youngstown State held a 33-28 lead at halftime after six lead changes and six times in the first 20 minutes.
Cleveland State took a 5-2 lead with 18:13 remaining, but a Roberts 3-pointer capped a 9-2 run that put YSU up 11-7 with 15:55 left.
Cleveland State battled back to take an 18-15 lead as neither team lead by more than two until another Roberts trey gave YSU a 27-24 lead with 4:21 left.
After CSU got the margin to one, the Penguins scored six straight and led 33-26 before Moss hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining.
Cleveland State used an 8-0 run to take a 40-39 lead with 12:38 in the second half, but Barber hit two free throws as the Penguins reclaimed the lead for good.
Humphrey added four steals while Davis dished out a game-high six assists.
The Penguins will travel to Wright State to take on the co-Horizon League leading Raiders on Wednesday. Tipoff at the Nutter Center is set for 7 p.m.
 
 
No. 15 Butler's 3-Point Shooting Dooms Penguins 67-39

Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team watched 15th-ranked Butler make more 3-pointers than Penguin field goals in a 67-39 loss at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs (16-2 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League) made 14 3-pointers in the contest while the Penguins (8-11 and 3-4) made 13 total field goals for the night.

The Bulldogs were 25-of-54 (46.3 percent) from the field for the game while the Penguins were 13-of-42 (31 percent).

Senior guard Keston Roberts was the Guin to score in double figures finishing with 11. For Butler, Pete Campbell came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points while junior guard Mike Green had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Two long droughts hurt the Penguins during the contest. YSU scored seven points, all on free throws in the final 9:41 of the first half. In the second half, the Guins did not make a field goal from the 11:44 mark until 4:27 remained in the game.

YSU returns to action on Saturday night when it plays host to Cleveland State. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
 
Five In Double Figures As Guins Beat UW-Milwaukee 81-63

Youngstown -- Five players scored in double figures led by a 22-point, 11-rebound effort by Quin Humphrey as the Youngstown State men's basketball team beat UW-Milwaukee 81-63 on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.
The victory improved the Penguins to 8-10 for the year and 3-3 in the Horizon League. YSU earned the season sweep of the Panthers after defeating them in December 68-65.

While Humphrey took game-high scoring honors he had plenty of help in that department. Junior guard Byron Davis had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists, senior guard Keston Roberts had 14 points and seven rebounds, junior forward John Barber scored 12 and sophomore Jack Liles had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Liles had all 10 points in the second half before fouling out.

As a team, YSU shot 50 percent making 30-of-60 shots for the evening. The Penguins rebounded nicely following a disappointing 32.8 percent contest two nights ago versus UW-Green Bay. Youngstown State also won the battle of the boards 43-36.

The Panthers shot 36.1 percent making 22-of-61 attempts. Leading the way offensively was Ricky Franklin who scored 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting.

In the first half, the Penguins trailed 18-15 following an Allen Hanson 3-pointer before scoring the next 10 points and grabbing the lead for good. The big play was a Davis steal and fast break dunk that put the Guins ahead 20-18 at the 5:24 mark of the first half. At halftime, YSU led 30-23 following a Roberts 3-pointer with two seconds left.

In the second half, the Guins led 46-31 just under six minutes into the frame. After Milwaukee pulled within 50-43 at the 10:33 mark Youngstown State went back on an 11-2 run for a 61-45 lead with 6:13 remaining to grab control of the contest.
YSU returns to action on Wednesday night when the travel to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to face nationally-ranked Butler. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
 
Defense Solid, Offense Struggles in 59-49 Loss

Youngstown -- A rough shooting night offset a good defensive effort as the Youngstown State men's basketball team lost 59-49 to UW-Green Bay on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins (7-10 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League) shot a season-low 32.8 percent in the contest making 19-of-58 attempts, including 2-of-14 3-pointers. YSU also struggled from the free-three line making 9-of-20 shots (45 percent).

Youngstown State was able to hold the Phoenix to 59 points, however UWGB shot 43.4 percent from the floor (23-53) and made eight 3-pointers.

Leading the way offensively for the Penguins was senior guard Quin Humphrey who scored 17 points on 8-of-25 shooting. Humphrey also grabbed nine rebounds.

Junior guard Byron Davis had 12 points while Keston Roberts had 10. Sophomore forward Jack Liles grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds in a losing effort.

For the Phoenix, Mike Schachtner scored a game-high 20 points and was its only player to finish in double figures.

In the first half, YSU led 10-7 but a UW-Green Bay 15-2 run became the difference in the contest. UWGB was able to push the advantage up to 16 points in the first half and held a 36-23 halftime lead.

In the second half, YSU was within nine points on two occasions in the first four minutes but by the 12-minute mark, the Phoenix had pushed its advantage back up to 16. The Penguins cut the deficit to 55-47 with 58 seconds remaining on a Keston Roberts 3-pointer, but four UWGB free throws sealed the victory.

Youngstown State must turnaround quickly and play host to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 7:35 p.m. following the Guins' women's contest against Detroit.
 
 
Penguin Gameday Basketball Television Show Debuts January 13

Youngstown -- The Penguin Gameday Basketball Television Show with Coaches Jerry Slocum and Tisha Hill debuts on Saturday, Jan. 13 at noon on WFMJ TV 21 and WBCB, The CW.
The show will air on the networks each Saturday for the remainder of the regular season. This year's show features interviews with basketball student-athletes and coaching tips from the Penguins' coaching staffs. Air dates are Jan. 20, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24.
 
 
Penguins Fall toTitans

Detroit, Mich. -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team watched Detroit scorch the nets in the first half and could never get back in the game losing 66-51 on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
In the first half, YSU shot just 39.1 percent while the Titans made 55.6 percent (15-of-27), including 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from behind the 3-point arc. Entering the game, Detroit was shooting 29.5 percent from 3-point range and averaged just five treys a game.
At halftime, the Guins trailed 38-21 before outscoring the Titans 30-28 in the second stanza, but still scored a season-low 51 points.
For the contest, YSU shot 40.4 percent, while the Titans finished at 53.1 percent after cooling off by hitting only 50 percent in the second half.

Junior guard Byron Davis led the Penguins effort by scoring 14 points while John Barber finished with 12. Quin Humphrey, who had scored in double figures in 27 consecutive contests, finished with nine points.

Detroit was led by junior guard Brandon Cotton who had a game-high 18 points. UDM's Zach Everingham was the only other Titan in double figures scoring just 10 points, but all came in the decisive first half.

The closest the Guins came in the game was 12-9 at the 15:50 mark of the first half. Detroit went on a 16-4 run over the next seven-plus minutes to grab control of the game.

YSU did win the battle of the boards 26-24 and made more free throws.
Following the loss, Youngstown State falls to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the Horizon League. Detroit improves to 5-10 and 2-2.

The Penguins return home for a two-contest stand beginning with a Thursday night tilt versus UW-Green Bay. Tipoff at the Beeghly Cener is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Win Streak Snapped With 70-61 Loss to Akron

Youngstown -- Quin Humphrey scored in double digits for the 15th straight game with 17 points and Keston Roberts posted double figures for the 13th consecutive time with 15 points but the Youngstown State basketball team dropped a 70-61 decision to Akron on Tuesday evening at the Beeghly Center

The Penguins, whose three-game winning streak was snapped, fall to 7-8 overall while the Zips improve to 9-3.

Youngstown State trailed by as may as 19 points, 56-37, with 9:46 to go after a Quade Milum jumper. Milum led the Zips with career-high 17 points.

The Penguins mounted a comeback attempt with a 17-8 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to 10 points, 64-54, after a George Cotal 3-pointer with 4:29 left.

A jumper by Cedrick Middleton and a dunk by Milum extended the Zips lead to 14 with 2:43 left.

Two free throws apiece by Humphrey and John Barber and a 3-pointer by Barber with 33 seconds left put the Penguins within nine, 70-61, but finished the game's scoring.

The Zips scored the first five points of the contest but Youngstown State, who shot just 30.8 percent and committed 12 turnovers in the first half, answered with a 9-6 run to cut the Zips lead to two points, 11-9, after a Dwight Holmes 3-point play at the 14:58 mark of the first half.

Over the next seven minutes, Akron outscored the Penguins, 14-6, and took a 10-point lead, 25-15, with 7:53 left. Jumpers by two jumpers by Jeremiah Wood, anoother by Middleton and 3-pointers by Jimmy Conyers and Nate Linhart and a dunk by Linhart keyed the Akron run.

Roberts trimmed the Zips' lead to five, 25-20, with a 3-pointer and a jumper but Romeo Travis extended UA's advantage to 10, 30-20, with a 3-point play and a layup at the 4:51 mark of the stanza.

A 3-pointer by Byron Davis with 4:30 remaining cut the deficit to seven points, 30-23, but it was the last field goal the Penguins would convert in the half. The Zips scored the last six points of the half to take a 13-point lead in to the locker room, 36-23.

Keston Roberts Named HL Player-of-the-Week For Second Time

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Senior guard Keston Roberts (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named the Horizon League's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Roberts concluded an impressive month with his best career scoring performance finishing with 30 points in a 76-71 Youngstown State victory over Loyola on Saturday.
In the contest against the Ramblers, he was 9-of-18 from the field, 2-of-6 from behind the 3-point line while going 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. His free throws made and attempts were also a career high. In 37 minutes, he also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Roberts made the key plays down the stretch to help ensure the Guins' third consecutive victory and longest winning streak since January 2004.
After Loyola had pulled within 72-71 with 21 seconds left, Roberts made a free throw and grabbed the offensive rebound of his own miss. Five seconds later, he drilled two free throws to move the margin back up to four points and help seal the win.
He has scored at least 20 points in six straight games and in seven December contests he averaged 22.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He now ranks tied for second in the Horizon League averaging 18.1 points per game.
Roberts was previously HL Player of the Week on Dec. 11. The Penguins return to action tonight when they play host to Akron. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
