More on the Opener
The 24-point margin of victory was the biggest for the Guins in a season opener since a 59-33 win over Wilmington College to begin the 1994-95 season. The last time the Penguins had won a game outside of the Beeghly Center to non-league team was Jan. 2, 2005 at Robert Morris (69-56). The 74 points scored was the third most in an opener since the 1993-94 season.

Debuts Go Well For New Guins

The last time the Guins had attempted at least 38 free-throw attempts in a game was a 43-attempt performance against Buffalo on Dec. 7, 2002. That was also the last time that YSU made 26 foul shots in a game.

What’s Next
The winner of tonight’s game travels to New York City next week for the Championship Round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Penguins or Spartans will play the winner of the Austin Regional (Texas, Alcorn State, Chicago State, St. Bonaventure) on Thursday, Nov. 16.
No matter what happens tonight, the Guins return to the court on Monday night at Duquesne. Tipoff for the contest at the Palumbo Center is set for 7 p.m. YSU beat the Dukes 72-51 last year.

Talented Back Court Duo Sign With Men's Basketball Program
Thursday, November 9 2006
Courtesy of:
Youngstown -- Youngstown State head men's basketball coach Jerry Slocum announced on Thursday the signing to two guards -- Vytautas Sulskis and Kevin Draughon -- to National Letters of Intent.

Draughon is a 6-5, 230-pound guard from Queens, N.Y., who is a sophomore at Monroe Community College. Sulskis, a native of Vilnius, Lithuania, is a senior at The Rock School of Gainesville, Fla.

Draughon is a highly-touted prospect who has been named a NJCAA Division II 2006-07 preseason first-team All-American. As a freshman, he averaged more than 15 points and five rebounds per game while being named a first-team All-Region performer.

Playing for Coach Jerry Burns, Draughon was the MVP of the Regional Tournament and helped lead the Tribunes to District Tournament and a 26-5 overall record. In regional tournament play he averaged 18 points and five rebounds a game leading MCC to the Region III championship.

His best performance of his first year was a 35-point outing against Mercyhurst North East.

A native of Queens, Draughon attended Bolingbrook High School in Chicago before originally attending a junior college in Texas. Now he is having success for a Monroe program that is ranked in the top 10 in preseason junior college rankings.

Slocum said Draughon is an individual who is just finding his basketball talent.

"We are excited to have a player with the abilities that Kevin has sign with our program," Slocum said. "With the upcoming graduation of our perimeter players, he fills an immediate need we will have at that position."
Draughon said he wanted to come to Youngstown State to be a part of something special.
"I'm the type of guy who wants to come in and take care of business and I felt like this is somewhere I could do that," Draughon said. "Coach (Michael) Wernicki and Coach (Brian) DePaoli made me feel like that can happen."

"They are trying to build something and when someone can be a part of that first core group that feels good. When the team has a lot of achievements it makes you feel like you made an impact in your short time there."
Draughon said he received interest from New Mexico State, Stony Brook, Niagara, UIC and Florida International.

Slocum said Sulskis is another individual who will have to fill a key void next season.

"He is a great perimeter player who shoots the ball extremely well and has great size," Slocum said. "He is a 6-foot-7 athlete who can play the two and three positions."

Sulskis said he selected YSU over High Point, Maine, Stetson and Jacksonville.

"The biggest reasons were the coaching staff and the guys on the team," Sulskis said. "I liked the area because it reminded me of Lithuania a little bit. I also liked the basketball facilities and the football stadium was really impressive."

He is in his second year with The Rock program. Last year the school went to the Regional Finals and won the district championship.

"Everyone at Youngstown State is committed to helping build the basketball program," he said. "They showed me that YSU wants to have a great program and I'm excited to be a part of that."

Guins Open Season With Win Over CMU

Youngstown – The Youngstown State men’s basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with an impressive 74-50 victory over Central Michigan in the semifinals to the East Lansing Bracket of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer at the Breslin Center on Wednesday.

Senior guard Quin Humphrey scored a game-high 25 points, including 19 in the first half, as the Guins (1-0) assumed control early and never trailed in the contest. In the first stanza, YSU shot 52 percent making 13-of-25 attempts from the field while CMU was limited to just 20 percent making 5-of-25 attempts.

After Central Michigan scored to get within 8-4, Youngstown State went on an 11-0 run in a span of five minutes and was never threatened again after leading 19-4 on a three-point play by Jack Liles.

CMU cut the deficit to 21-11, but a 3-pointer by Humphrey and a jumper by John Barber pushed the advantage back to 15. Following two Marko Spica free throws, Humphrey drained another 3-pointer and the Guins connected on three free throws to go in front 32-13.

Youngstown State built its biggest lead of the half at 44-18 following a Chris Booth three-point play. At halftime, the Penguins owned a 45-20 advantage.

In the second half, the Guins used some solid free-throw shooting to keep their large advantage. After Humphrey’s basket 40 seconds into the period, YSU did not make a field goal until Byron Davis’ breakaway dunk at the 10:24 mark. During that period, the Penguins were six-of-six from the free-throw line and never saw their lead get below 20 points.

Youngstown State’s biggest advantage of the game was 27 which came twice (63-36 and 65-38) with just over four minutes remaining.

Humphrey, who sat out the final eight minutes, was 7-of-13 from the field, 4-of-8 from behind the 3-point stripe and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

The Penguins return full-time starters in seniors Quin Humphrey and Keston Roberts along with part-time starters Jack Liles, Colin LaForme, Dwight Holmes and John Barber. Players making their YSU debuts include transfer guard Byron Davis (New Mexico State), junior college transfers George Cotal and Chris Booth along with freshman Alek Mrozik.

Humphrey was a first-team All-Horizon League selection in 2005-06 and is a preseason first-team pick for 2006-07. He led the league in scoring and rebounding last year.

The 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $3 million since the tournament began in 1996. Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration between the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.

The All-Time Series

The Penguins have never beaten Central Michigan in four previous tries. All four of those games were played in the 1980’s with two coming in Youngstown and two coming in Mount Pleasant. Both contests at the Beeghly Center were decided by one point -- 67-66 in December 1989 and 69-68 in December 1985. The Chippewas won both games in Mount Pleasant by 15 and 30 points.

YSU has never played Brown or Michigan State on the hardwood.

Humphrey Lauded By League

Senior guard Quin Humphrey, a first-team All-Horizon League selection last year, was named to the preseason all-conference team prior to this season. Humphrey, Loyola’s Blake Schilb, Detroit’s Brandon Cotton, Wright State’s DaShaun Wood and UW-Green Bay’s Ryan Evanochko were the HL’s first-team all-league squad.

Last season, Humphrey averaged 18.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest to lead the Horizon League in both categories. Humphrey was just the second player in the conference’s 26-year history to lead in both categories.

New Floor General

Junior guard Byron Davis will take over the point guard duties this season. Davis, a native of Detroit, Mich., sat out the 2005-06 campaign after transferring to YSU from New Mexico State.

He played two seasons with the Aggies appearing in 57 games while starting 35 contests. He scored 334 points, grabbed 154 rebounds and had 105 assists during his time with the program.

Last year, Derrick Harris ran the point and went on to lead the Horizon League in assists for league games and total contests.

Early Slate Unforgiving

The Penguins are set to play at least seven games in November. That could increase to nine if YSU can win the Michigan State Regional of the 2K College Hoops Classic and advance to the championship round at Madison Square Garden in New York next week. Included in the early season slate are contests at Michigan and at nationally-ranked Ohio State.

Three Pointers Went Up

The Penguins set a school record by attempting 578 3-pointers last season. Of those 578, YSU made 191, the second most in school history. The school mark for 3-pointers made in a year was 1999 in 1997-98.

YSU Hit the Glass Hard

Despite not being the tallest team, the Penguins hit the boards hard during the 2005-06 campaign averaging 34 rebounds per game. YSU won the rebound margin for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Guins outrebounded an opponent on 14 occasions during the year.

Slocum Ranks in Top 10

Coach Jerry Slocum has won 587 games entering his 32nd season as a collegiate head coach. Slocum ranks 13th among all active NCAA head coaches in victories. Among Division I coaches, Slocum ranks sixth behind Texas Tech’s Bob Knight, Arizona’s Lute Olson, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Connecticut’s Jim Calhoun and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim.

Roberts Looks to Heat Up

Senior guard Keston Roberts scored 391 points in first year with the Penguins last season. Roberts started out strong scoring double figures in 17 of his first 19 games. However, he scored in his final nine games of the year he had double figures in just three contests.

Foreign Legion

The Penguins definitely have an international flare with three foreign players on the roster. Junior forward Colin LaForme is from Canada, sophomore guard Mikko Niemi is a native of Finland and freshman guard Alek Mrozik is from Poland.

New Faces Make Debut

Making their Youngstown State debuts on Wednesday will be freshman Alek Mrozik, junior college transfers Chris Booth and George Cotal, transfer Greg Mayes and redshirt junior guard Byron Davis.

LaForme Looks to Step Up

Junior center Colin LaForme started 12 games last season, averaging 15.1 minutes per contest. LaForme had a career-high 80 points, 72 rebounds, 18 steals and 14 assists seeing increased playing time.

Barber Back in the Mix

Junior forward John Barber was second on the squad averaging 4.4 rebounds per game in 2005-06. Barber played in every game a year ago starting 12 contests. He had career highs in minutes played, field goals made, field-goal attempts, 3-pointers made and attempted, rebounds, assists and points scored.

Holmes Started 13 Games

Senior forward Dwight Holmes started 13 games for the Penguins last season. Holmes had 30 rebounds and scored 35 points for the season. He averaged 9.1 minutes per contest.

Going the Distance

Four players went the complete game without a break last season. Derrick Harris, Domonique Crawford, Keston Roberts and Quin Humphrey each played every minute of a game last season. Of the two returning players, Humphrey did it six times and Roberts did it twice.

Humphrey Had Double Vision

Senior guard Quin Humphrey had 10 double-doubles last season, the most since Jerome Sims had an impressive 16 in 1991-92.

In his last outing, Humphrey scored in double figures 27 times last year and had double figures in rebounds on 11 occasions. In his 83-game career, he has scored in double figures 56 times. In his last 56 games, he has scored in double figures 52 times.
