Youngstown -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team came to the Beeghly Center on Tuesday night looking for a battle with Siena. Three hours later, the Penguins walked off the court suffering a 79-78 defeat in a 60-minute basketball game in which both teams left everything they had out on the floor.
In a back-and-forth battle that was tied at 50 when the first overtime began, Siena's Tay Fisher ended the game after four extra sessions drilling a 3-pointer with 6.8 seconds remaining. Khari McQueen put the Penguins (2-5) ahead 78-76 on a basket with 18 seconds remaining. But Fisher came down and drained his third three of the fourth overtime to put the Saints (2-7) up by one. YSU's Jon Mends charged down court and got an open shot from 12 feet off, but his attempt was long and Jack McClinton grabbed the rebound to end the second-longest game in school history.
The longest game in school history was a six-overtime affair against Gannon -- a 71-69 defeat -- in the non-shot clock era on Feb. 28, 1966.
Derrick Harris scored a game-high 22 points for the Penguins while playing 57 minutes. YSU point guard Jon Mends played 53 minutes finishing with a team-high six assists.
For Siena, McClinton played 57 minutes scoring 14 points. Tommy Mitchell had a team-high 17 points for the Saints who had four players finish in double figures and three players foul out. Siena was already short-handed when leading scorer Michael Haddix did not play because of illness.
YSU's best chance to seal the win was in the second overtime. The Penguins led 64-59 with 1:22 left, but Fisher made a trey and Mitchell made two foul shots with 24 seconds left. YSU's chance to win came on a 3-pointer from Zach Silverman that was shot off the rim.
In the first overtime, Youngstown State led by four with 1:51 remaining, but Mitchell made a jumper and Antoine Jordan tied the game at 54 with 45 seconds left on a basket.
With 5:10 remaining in regulation, the Penguins held a 44-37 led, but against Siena rallied to eventually take a 50-49 lead with 29 seconds left on a bucket by Jordan. YSU's Brian Radakovich made one-of-two free-throw attempts with 18 seconds remaining and the Penguins forced overtime when Radakovich blocked Jordan's shot with three seconds left.
For the game, YSU shot 35.6 percent (26-of-73) while Siena was 27-of-74 (36.5 percent) from the field. The Saints outrebounded YSU 55-51.
McQueen played 36 minutes in his first game of the season. He had missed the first six games after suffering a broken bone in his right foot on the second day of practice in October. Brian Radakovich and Quin Humphrey, who scored in double figures for the seventh straight game, fouled out for the Guins.
Youngstown State will look to snap a five-game losing streak when it opens Horizon League play on Saturday night with a trip to Wright State. Tipoff at the Nutter Center is set for 7 p.m.
