YSU Hangs On for 82-80 Win

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Keston Roberts scored 31 points, 20 of them in the first half, and Youngstown State hung on after blowing a 17-point second-half lead to defeat Detroit 82-80 on Tuesday in the first round of the Horizon League tournament.

A 3-pointer by Detroit's Brandon Bell tied it for the fourth time at 77-77 with 1:07 left in the game, but Roberts hit a jumper and John Barber made his only two free throw attempts for the Penguins (14-16).

Jon Goode hit another 3 to pull the Titans within 1 with two seconds left, and Detroit (11-19) fouled after a timeout with 1 second left. Quin Humphrey sunk one of two free throws, and Bell missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Humphrey finished with 19 points and five assists, and Jack Liles added 13 for the Penguins.

Detroit's Brandon Cotton scored 33 points, including 6-for-9 shooting on 3s. Goode finished with 11 points and Chris Hayes had 10.

Roberts scored the first 10 points of the game and hit another jumper to put the Penguins up 14-2 early. Youngstown State led by as many as 19 points late in the first half and was still up 52-35 two minutes into the second.

But the Titans chipped away, tying it at 62-62 with 8:03 to go, and the game stayed tight after that.

Youngstown State plays Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday in the quarterfinals.
 
 
Humphrey Claims League Scoring Title in 68-55 Loss to Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio -- Quin Humphrey finished with eight points to win the Horizon League scoring title for the second straight year as Youngstown State dropped its regular season finale to Cleveland State 68-55 Saturday at the Wolstein Center.
Humphrey, who had scored more than 30 points in three of the last five contests, shot just eight times and went to the free throw line once.
The Penguins finish the regular season 13-16 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon League while the Vikings finished 10-20 and 3-13.
Despite the loss YSU will be the fifth seed in the Horizon League Tournament and will host a postseason game on Tuesday for the first time since 1995. If UW-Milwaukee defeats UW-Green Bay this evening the Penguins will play Detroit. If the Phoenix wins, YSU will play UW-Milwaukee.
Byron Davis scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Jack Liles finished with 14 and John Barber had 11. Humphrey finished with a game-high nine rebounds. The Penguins played the second half without Keston Roberts, who suffered a minor thigh bruise.
Raheem Moss scored a game-high 21 points while Bahaadar Russell and J'Nathan Bullock posted 11.
Cleveland State started the game on a 7-2 run before YSU scored six straight to take its first lead at the 15:51 mark. That was the first of six lead changes in the first half.
CSU led 19-14 before the Penguins scored seven straight to take the lead 21-19 on a Liles bucket. The Vikings then scored 11 straight to take a 37-26 advantage at the 1:03 mark and led 37-27 at the half.
The Penguins got within 44-39 on two Barber free throws at the 13-minute mark, but the Vikings went on a 12-2 run to go up 15 with 8:03 remaining. YSU couldn't get closer than 11 the rest of the way.
 
 
Seniors Dominate, Slocum Wins 600th as YSU Tops Wright State 72-57 on Senior Night

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Quin Humphrey scored 35 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Youngstown State to a 72-57 win over Wright State on Thursday night. Fellow senior Keston Roberts added 19 as the pair played their final regular season contest at the Beeghly Center. The victory was also head coach Jerry Slocum 600th win in his career.

Humphrey shot 10-of-18 and made 11 of 12 free throws for the Penguins (13-15, 7-8 Horizon League). Despite the loss, Wright State (21-9, 13-3) clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and at least a tie for the league's regular-season title. No. 15 Butler's loss to Loyola of Chicago on Thursday night ended its chance to win the title outright.

Wright State led 33-25 at halftime, but Youngstown State started the second period with a 9-0 run to take a 34-33 advantage on Byron Davis' dunk with 16:58 left. The two teams traded the lead before the Penguins went ahead for good on Humphrey's foul shot with 8:16 remaining.

Keston Roberts added 19 points for Youngstown State, which shot 51 percent (23-of-45) overall and 62 percent in the second half. The Penguins outrebounded the Raiders 41-33.

DaShaun Wood led Wright State with 15 points and Jordan Pleiman added 10 points. Both had five rebounds. The Raiders shot about 25 percent (14-of-55).
 
 
Humphrey's Big Week Reaps HL Player-of-the-Week Honor

Indianapolis, Ind. -- On the heels of scoring 56 points in two Youngstown State men's basketball victories, senior guard Quin Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) was named the Horizon League's Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
It is the fourth time in Humphrey's distinguished career that he has been named the League Player of the Week.

Humphrey scored 36 points in a come-from-behind 82-70 victory over Detroit on Wednesday night. On Saturday, he scored 20 points, including two game-clinching free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining, over Eastern Kentucky (66-61).
Against the Titans, he was 12-of-18 from the field, including an 8-of-12 performance from behind the 3-point arc. It was the second time in three games he had made eight 3-pointers. His biggest shot of the game was a four-point play with the Guins trailing 66-64 with 4:48 left. On the play he drained a 3-pointer and converted the free throw to give YSU the lead for good. He also went over 1,600 career points in the contest while picking up his fifth career 30-point game.
In the 66-61 non-league win over Eastern Kentucky, he had a key steal with 12 seconds left and YSU leading by one. With 2.1 seconds and the Guins leading by three he drained two free throws to seal the victory. Of his game-high 20 points, 16 came in the second half. He was 8-of-11 from the field.
In the two games, he was 20-of-39 from the field, 10-of-16 from 3-point range, 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, grabbed 10 rebounds, had seven assists and three steals.

Humphrey and fellow guard Keston Roberts, a two-time HL Player of the Week this year, will play their final home regular-season games on Thursday night when YSU entertains league-leader Wright State. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.

The contest features the top two scorers in the Horizon League. WSU's DaShaun Wood ranks first (19.6 per game) while Humphrey is second (18.9 a contest).
In his career, Humphrey has played in 110 games, starting 100 contests. He has scored 1,633 points, grabbed 642 rebounds, dished out 239 assists and has 133 steals. He is the school record-holder in career minutes played at 3,536.
 
 
Penguins "Bust" Eastern Kentucky

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Quin Humphrey scored 20 points, Jack Liles added 18 and Youngstown State closed with an 8-0 run to beat Eastern Kentucky 66-61 on Saturday.

Michael Brock's 3-pointer with 1:53 left put Eastern Kentucky (17-10) ahead 61-58.

John Barber then hit two foul shots with 1:32 left for the Penguins (12-15) before Byron Davis' steal led to two Liles free throws with 1:12 remaining, giving the Penguins a 62-61 lead.

The teams traded possessions until Humphrey had a steal with 13 seconds left that led to Keston Roberts' two foul shots to push the lead to 64-61.

After Adam Leonard missed a possible tying 3-pointer, Humphrey closed the scoring with two more foul shots.

Mike Rose led Eastern Kentucky with 16 points, with Leonard scoring 14 and Darnell Dialls adding 10.
 
 
Humphrey Scores 36 in Penguins' 82-70 Comeback Victory

Youngstown -- Quin Humphrey scored 36 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field, including eight 3-pointers, to lead the Penguins to an 82-70 come-from-behind victory over Detroit on Wednesday evening at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, who shot 53.6 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game, improve to 11-15 overall and 6-8 in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Senior Keston Roberts posted 19 points and dished out five assists while Jack Liles grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Penguins trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, 49-39, and by eight, 60-52, with 10:08 remaining after a Jon Goode jumper.

Humphrey drilled a 3-pointer at the 6:39 mark to bring the Penguins within four, 63-59, but Detroit's Brandon Bell answered with a triple to put the Titans back ahead by seven at with 6:23 remaining.

The Penguins scored nine straight points - capped by a four-point play by Humphrey - to take a 68-66 lead and outscored the Titans 23-4 over the last six minutes of the game.

Detroit, who shot 51.4 percent in the first half, scored the first seven points of the game before the Penguins used an 11-2 run to take an 11-9 lead with 15:35 left.

The Titans regained the lead after a Chris Hayes jumper at the 14:37 mark and never relinquished the advantage until a 3-pointer by Humprhey and a jumper by Dwight Holmes put the Penguins ahead 25-23 with 8:43 to go.

A tip-in and a 3-pointer by Detroit's Zach Everingham, who scored 14 points in the first half, and a 3-pointer by Jon Goode gave the Titans a 31-25 edge with 5:27 remaining.

Three-pointers by Humphrey and Roberts brought the Penguin with three, 33-30, but the Titans scored seven straight points, capped by a Everingham trey, to extend their lead to 10-points with 1:50 left.

Humphrey, who scored 19 points in the first stanza, nailed two more 3-pointers to cut the deficit to four, 40-36, with 36 seconds left but Nemanja Jokic buzzer-beating put-back gave Detroit a 42-36 lead at the half.
YSU plays host to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday in the first matchup between the teams since February 1988. Tipoff is set for 4:25 p.m.
 
 
Cold Shooting Night Results in 55-46 Loss at UW-Green Bay

Green Bay, Wis. -- Jack Liles third double-double of the season couldn't offset an cold shooting performance for Youngstown State as the Penguins fell to UW-Green Bay 55-46 on Thursday evening at the Resch Center.
Liles finished with 14 points on a 6-of-14 shooting, 13 rebounds and five blocks, but the Penguins (10-15, 5-8 Horizon League) shot a season-low 28 percent from the floor and 15 percent from 3-point land.
The Phoenix (14-11, 6-6) shot just 35.6 percent but held the Penguins to long scoring droughts toward the end of both halves.
Byron Davis added 10 points and four assists while Keston Roberts finished with 13 for YSU.
Mike Schachtner scored a game-high 21 points and Ryan Evanochko added 16 for UWGB.
After a Liles two-handed dunk made the score 33-30 in favor of UW-Green Bay with 15:15 remaining in the second half, the Phoenix scored the next five points to go up eight and never led by less than five the rest of the way.
John Barber hit a jumper with 9:46 left to make the score 42-37, but UWGB scored seven straight points to take its largest lead of the game at 49-37.
After Barber's bucket, YSU missed its next eight shots and turned the ball over three times before Roberts hit a jumper with 3:13 remaining to make the score 49-39.
YSU got within eight twice in the final 2:18, but UWGB made 4-of-6 from the free throw line and kept up the strong defense to hold on.
Quin Humphrey was held to six points on 2-of-13 shooting but grabbed 12 rebounds.
YSU led by three several times in the first half despite shooting just over 28 percent in the half.
Roberts' jumper with 7:58 left put YSU up 19-16, but the Penguins did not score again until a Davis layup at the 4:17 mark.
Liles tied the score at 23 with 2:13 remaining in the half before Schachtner hit a trey and Aswan Minatee beat the buzzer to put UWGB up five at the break.
Schachtner hit 6-of-9 from the floor in the first half as the only player to reach double figures. Roberts had nine points to lead YSU while Liles scored six points after posting the Penguins' first two buckets early. Liles added three of YSU's five first-half blocks, and Humphrey grabbed eight rebounds.
YSU will look to rebound on Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. contest against Detroit at the Beeghly Center.
 
 
Humphrey's 37, Gritty Team Effort Lead Guins to First-Ever Win Over UIC

Youngstown -- Senior guard Quin Humphrey scored a career-best 37 points as the Youngstown State men's basketball team overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to earn the program's first-ever win over UIC, beating the Flames 92-87 in a wild contest at the Beeghly Center on Saturday night.
Humphrey was on fire making 13-of-15 from the field, including 8-of-9 from behind the 3-point line. The eight 3-pointers made rank as the second most by an individual in Penguin history. He also had 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and dished out seven assists.

For the contest, both teams shot 60 percent in the first half, nine players finished in double figures and two teams combined for 25 3-pointers made while making just 18 free throws. YSU and UIC were 25-of-38 from behind the 3-point arc, a scorching 65.8 percent combined for the schools.
The Penguins (10-14 overall and 5-7 in the Horizon League) drained a school-record-tying 14 treys on the evening and needed everyone to hold off the Flames (9-15 and 4-7), who played just seven players.

A fast-paced first half featured six ties and three lead changes but UIC was able to hold a 48-45 advantage at the break. UIC was 18-of-30 from the field and 7-of-9 from 3-point range. YSU was also 18-of-30 from the field going 8-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc.

Holding a 50-47 lead just two minutes into the second half, the Flames went on a 13-4 run to pull in front 63-51 on a 3-pointer by Jovan Stefanov. But the Penguins answered by scoring 17 of the next 22 and tied the game at 68 on a layup by Keston Roberts.

A back-and-forth battled ensued over the next seven minutes when YSU took the lead for good at 82-81 on a Roberts bucket with 2:52 remaining. After Othyus Jeffers missed a shot, Roberts drained a trey to push the advantage to four at the 2:07 mark.
In the final minute, the Guins made five free throws and Roberts had a breakaway dunk to hang on for the five-point victory.
Roberts had 21 points while Jack Liles scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Byron Davis finished with 10 points and a career-high eight assists.
Leading the way for the Flames was Stefanov who had 19 leading five players in double figures. Jeffers had 18, Josh Mayo scored 16, T.J. Gray finished with 13 and Scott Vandermeer contributed 10.
The Penguins return to action on Thursday night when they travel to UW-Green Bay to play the Phoenix at the Resch Center.
 
 
Godfrey’s Jumper Lifts Penguins Past Loyola, 66-64

Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored a career-high 20 points and hit a running jumper in the lane with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Youngstown State women’s basketball team to a 66-64 victory over Loyola on Saturday evening at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, which place four players in double figures for the second time this season, improve to 6-14 overall and 4-6 in the Horizon League while the Ramblers fall to 6-15 overall and 4-6 in the circuit.

Junior Jessica Schloemp’s jumper with 44 seconds remaining knotted the game at 64-64 and her defensive rebound after a Maggie McCloskey miss set up Godfrey’s game-winner.

Two free throws by Loyola’s Jenna Real put the Ramblers ahead by four, 63-59, with 2:33 left, but Godfrey nailed her second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to one, 63-62, with 2:13 to go.

Jennifer Juergens put the Ramblers back up by two by converting one free throw at the 1:08 mark.

The Penguins scored 38 points in the paint compared to 22 for Loyola and outscored the Ramblers’ bench 17-8.

Junior Lauren Branson scored a season-high 11 points and dished out six assists for the third straight game. Sophomore Nikita LaFleur scored in double figures off the bench for the second consecutive game and added seven rebounds and five blocks.

Ashley Pendleton also added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Penguins.

Youngstown State takes on Oakland in a non-league game, Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.
 
 
First-Half Run Lifts No. 11 Butler Past Penguins, 71-58

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior Quin Humphrey posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds but the 11th-ranked Butler Bulldogs shot 47.2 percent from the field and connected on 11 3-pointers en route to a 71-58 victory over Youngstown State on Wednesday evening at the Beeghly Center.
Youngstown State falls to 9-14 overall and 4-7 in the Horizon League while Butler improves to 21-2 overall and 9-1 in the circuit.

Butler's MIke Green led all scorers with 23 points while Pete Campbell connected on 8-of-10, including four 3-pointers, for 20 points.

YSU's Keston Roberts and Byron Davis also scored in double figures with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Butler hit 9-of-18 treys in the first half and held a 19-13 rebound advantage to build a 39-23 lead at the break.
Youngstown State led several times early, including 13-11 at the 12:34 mark, before Butler went on a 24-5 run over the next eight-and-a-half minutes and led by as many as 17, 35-18, with 3:50 remaining.
Campbell came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and a deuce for 11 first-half points while Mike Green had 12.
While the Bulldogs shot 50 percent from behind the arc in the first half, they were just 5-of-13 inside.

The Penguins play host to UIC, Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7:35 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
