Youngstown -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team suffered its fourth straight heartbreaking defeat dropping a 76-73 contest to Wright State on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center. YSU tied the game with 17.8 seconds left on a layup by Vytas Sulskis. The Raiders went right back up the floor and Troy Tabler's deep 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left was the game-winner.

From the 12-minute mark to the final buzzer the contest was a nip-and-tuck affair with neither team leading by more than four points. The second half featured five lead changes and three ties while the game had six ties and 11 lead changes.

Youngstown State never led again after grabbing a 64-63 lead on a Sulskis layup with 3:32 left in the game. But the Guins made the Raiders, who clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament with the win, work for the win down the to the final second.

Wright State took a 66-64 lead when N'Gai Evans made a driving layup and free throw at the 3:20 mark. On the Guins' ensuing possession, Brown picked Sulskis' pocket and slammed it home 15 seconds later to boost the lead to 68-64.

Trailing by four with 1:24 remaining DeAndre Mays converted two free throws to cut the deficit in half. Wright State's Ronnie Thomas missed his next two free-throw attempts with 55.1 seconds remaining. As Sulskis grabbed the rebound in the corner he was fouled.

With 52.4 seconds left, Sulskis drained both attempts tying the contest at 70.

WSU's Vaughn Duggins took the ball to the hoop and was fouled by Dallas Blocker with 44.3 ticks left. Duggins converted both shots to put the Raiders in front 72-70. Mays made one free throw with 37.2 left to cut the deficit to 72-71.

YSU was forced to foul Troy Tabler with 28 seconds left and he made just the second of his two attempts. The Penguins didn't panic and tied the game with 17.8 ticks left when Mays dished off to Sulskis who tied the game on a driving layup.

That set the stage for Cooperwood's dramatic 3-pointer in the final second.

The Penguins drop to 8-20 overall and 2-15 in the Horizon League and have now lost their last four games by a total of nine points. YSU had lost its previous three contests by just two points. Wright State improves to 19-10 and 12-5 and will be the tournament's number two seed.

YSU had four players finish in double figures led by Sirlester Martin's 16 points. Sulskis had 15, Mays finished with 14 and Ashen Ward notched a career-best 12 points. Sulskis also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with his second career double-double.

For Wright State, six players finished in double figures led by Brown's 16.

YSU dominated the boards with a 37-21 advantage. YSU shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) while WSU hit at a 54.3 percent clip (25-of-46).

Trailing by five with just over eight minutes left in the first half, the Penguins used an impressive 18-1 run, at one time scoring 13 unanswered points, turning a 22-17 deficit into a 35-23 lead with 2:13 left before the break. But Wright State scored the final nine points as the first half ended with YSU ahead 35-32.

For awhile it looked like the Penguins were going to run away with a large halftime lead, but WSU roared back. Martin and Ward spearheaded the 18-1 run as each scored seven points. The lone Raider point during that stretch was a free throw by N'Gai Evans at the 2:57 mark, which momentarily halted a string of 13 consecutive Penguin points.

Wright State concluded the half with the final nine points starting with a Duggins bucket. WSU pulled within three points on a three-point play by Cory Cooperwood with 52 seconds left.

Both teams shot 44 percent in the opening stanza with the Guins converting 13-of-29 shots while the Raiders made 11-of-25 attempts. The Penguins had 19-13 advantage on the glass and made 6-of-7 free-throw attempts. Martin had 14 in the first half, while Ward finished with 10.

Ward's Buzzer-Beater Waved Off in 64-62 Loss to Milwaukee
Tuesday, February 16 2010
Courtesy of: YSU
Milwaukee, Wis. -- Youngstown State used a feverish rally in the last two-and-a-half minutes of the game to cut a 13-point deficit down to one but sophomore Ashen Ward's apparent game-winning 3-pointer was waved off as the Penguins dropped a 64-62 decision to Milwaukee on Monday evening at U.S. Cellular Arena.

The Penguins fall to 8-18 overall and 2-14 in the Horizon League while Milwaukee improves to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in the league.

The Penguins trailed 60-47 with 2:38 to go in the game after a 3-point play by Milwaukee's Jason Averkamp.

After a Zack Rebillot tip-in, senior DeAndre Mays, who led the Penguins with 23 points, buried two consecutive 3-pointers and senior Kelvin Bright made a layup with 41 seconds to bring the Guins within three, 60-57.

Averkamp extended the Panthers' edge back to five, but Ward's offensive rebound on a Mays missed 3-pointer and subsequent layup put the Guins down 62-59 with 18 seconds remaining.

The Penguins forced an Averkamp turnover under Milwaukee's basket with 12.9 seconds remaining, but turned the ball back over to the Panthers with eight seconds left.

Milwaukee's Jerard Ajami made just one of two charity tosses and Mays responded with his third triple to bring the Guins within one, 63-62, with four seconds to go.

Ryan Haggerty converted only one free throw to extend the Panthers' lead to 64-62 and Ward's did not get his final 3-point off before the buzzer.

After owning a 31-28 halftime edge and extending that lead to four points, 39-35, with 14:34 to go, the Penguins went scoreless for more than six minutes and recorded just eight more points until Rebillot's put-back at the 2:20 mark.

In the first half, the Penguins and Panthers battled through four ties and 10 lead changes before the Penguins were able to score the six of the last seven points of the stanza to take a 31-28 lead into the lockerroom.

Mays' first 3-pointer of the game gave the Penguins a 28-27 advantage with 3:01 left and converted a free throw to put the Guins up two, 29-27, with 1:07 left.

After a free throw by Averkamp, freshman Eddie D'Haiti's layup with 39 seconds to go finished the scoring in the half.

Butler does it — again
Friday, February 12 2010
Courtesy of: JOE SCALZO Vindicator sports staff
YOUNGSTOWN — For the first 30 minutes of Thursday’s game, it was hard to tell whether Youngstown State or Butler was the No. 15 team in the country.

For the last 10 minutes, there wasn’t any doubt.

Butler senior Gordon Hayward scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds and the nationally-ranked Bulldogs used a 15-2 run to put the game away en route to a 68-57 win over the Penguins in a Horizon League game at Beeghly Center.

YSU trailed by four, 53-49, with just under six minutes left when the Bulldogs made their run.

“We didn’t make shots and they made shots,” said junior Vytas Sulskis, “and they came out victorious.”

Still, it was an encouraging performance for YSU, which was trounced in its first meeting with the Bulldogs. In that Jan. 16 meeting, the Penguins fell behind 49-26 at halftime and ended up losing by 30.

“It was definitely motivating,” said Sulskis of that loss. “We came out with a chip on our shoulders and we wanted to beat them.”

Butler took a quick 16-5 lead to start Thursday’s game, but the Penguins responded with a 23-4 run fueled by 12 points from senior guard DeAndre Mays.

Mays finished with 18 points and three rebounds and was extremely active on defense, using his long arms and quickness to keep Butler from getting comfortable on the perimeter.

“He’s really good,” said Butler coach Brad Stevens of Mays. “He can do a lot of things.

“I think [YSU] did a great job tonight. They were playing with great presence on both sides of the ball.”

The Bulldogs withstood YSU’s run and chipped away at the deficit before a three-point play by Hayward gave them a 31-30 lead in the closing seconds of the first half.

YSU entered the break trailing by that score, but considering the team’s first meeting, it was hard to be disappointed.

“Other than the 23-4 run in the middle of the first half, we played well and we knew we had to play well,” said Stevens. “The thing is, when they hit great shots like they did in the first half, our guys do a good job of staying even-keel and not panicking.”

That poise comes from knowing they’re going to get every Horizon League team’s best shot.

“Part of it’s hard because you know you’re always going to get that but part of it makes you heighten your preparation and focus and I think that’s a good thing for college-age kids,” said Stevens.

Butler (22-4, 15-0) clinched the league title outright with the victory — the Bulldogs entered the night with a five-game lead on Cleveland State — and has won 14 straight games, the second-longest streak in school history.

It’s also the second-best current streak in the country behind Siena’s 15 straight.

Those teams meet on Feb. 20.

Matt Howard had 11 points and Willie Veasley added 10 for the Bulldogs, who are 18-2 all-time against YSU, winning of 18 of the last 19 meetings.

Sulskis scored 14 points and Vance Cooksey had 11 for the Penguins, who are 1-23 against nationally-ranked opponents. The lone victory came in 1952.

“I thought our kids played hard,” said YSU coach Jerry Slocum. “I thought we did a good job defending Howard. I thought the turning point was when he got his fourth foul [with 10 minutes left] and they went small.

“That was a tough matchup for us.”

The Penguins have lost eight straight Horizon League games since beating UIC and Loyola back-to-back in early January. Their lone win in the last month came against North Carolina Central.

The Penguins play host to Valparaiso on Saturday night, then play three more league games before the league tournament begins March 2.

“We know we can beat anyone in the Horizon League,” said Sulskis. “We’re going to build up on it [Thursday’s performance] and bring it on Saturday.”

In the opening half, both teams made 10 field goals and combined to make 10 3-pointers (six by YSU and four by the Bulldogs). The Bulldogs dominated the glass grabbing 16 boards compared to YSU's seven.

Butler threatened to run away with the contest early scoring 16 of the games first 21 points. But the Penguins settled down using a 15-2 spurt to get back in the ball game and take their first lead of the night at 20-18 on a 3-pointer by Mays.

YSU kept the pressure on and scored seven of the next nine points to lead 28-20 following a Kelvin Bright free throw at the 2:50 mark. The Guins outscored Butler 23-4 from the 13:26 mark to the 2:50 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs connected on just one field goal during that stretch, a layup by Shawn Vanzant with 9:52 left in the half.

Butler ended the half strong outscoring the Guins 11-2 in the final two-and-a-half minutes. The Bulldogs had the final six points of the stanza after falling behind 30-25 to grab the slim lead. Willie Veasley drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Gordon Hayward's three-point play with 3.6 seconds left gave Butler its first lead since 8:39.
