Youngstown, Ohio -- Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced that Sheldon Brogdon, a Division I Third-Team All-Ohio selection in 2008, signed a National Letter of Intent during the late signing period to join the Youngstown State University men’s basketball program.

Brogdon, a 6-foot, 170-pound guard from Warren G. Harding High School, averaged 18.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, two assists and two steals per game as a senior.

Slocum said that Brogdon is a versatile player and is pleased that an outstanding local product decided to sign with YSU.

“We are excited to have one of the best local-area players sign with us and stay home and play in the Horizon League, which is a very tough league,” Slocum said. “Sheldon has the athleticism to play multiple positions.

“He shoots the ball well and has the quickness to be a good defensive player.”

Since the consolidation of Warren G. Harding and Warren Western Reserve High Schools in 1990, Brogdon is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,003 career points. He is also the school’s all-time leader with 112 3-pointers made and ranks second with 376 career field goals made.

As a junior, Brogdon averaged 21 points, three assists and three rebounds per game, and led his squad to a 23-2 record and an appearance in the Division I Regional Final.

He was also named First-Team All-Northeastern Ohio and was a All-Steel Valley Conference First-Team selection.

“Youngstown State is a great fit for me,” Brodgon said. “It is close to home and I liked the way they play. I think I can help them and they can help me become a better player.

“YSU plays freely and together,” Brogdon said. “The coaching staff was also a big factor in my decision and being close to my family was important.”

Slocum added that Brogdon comes from an outstanding and well-coached high school program.

“I have great respect for Coach Arnold and the Warren Harding basketball program,” Slocum said. “They do a tremendous job, not only with the way they coach on the court, but also the way they care about their student-athletes off the floor.”

Brogdon joins two-time All-Ohio Third-Team selection Lamar McKnight (Bedford St. Peter Chanel H.S.) in the 2009-10 recruiting class.
