Youngstown -- Youngstown State men's basketball coach John Robic announced the signing of Mott Community College guard/forward Domonique Crawford to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday.
Crawford, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound native of River Rouge, Mich., has spent the past two seasons in a very successful Mott (Flint, Mich.) program under coach Steve Schmidt. In 2002-03, Mott won the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championship while the Bears lost in the 2003-04 Championship Game to Cuyahoga Community College 74-67.
"We are happy Domonique has decided to become a member of our program," Robic said. "He brings with him winning experience after two very successful years at Mott. He is a very athletic, very mature player. We hope he can bring the leadership qualities that he had at Mott to Youngstown State."
Last season, Crawford helped Mott to a 31-5 record by averaging 11.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game while being named second-team All-Eastern MCCAA. During this year's tournament run, Crawford helped lead the Bears to the title game scoring 15 points in a semifinal overtime victory over Kirkwood (Iowa) Community College.
As a freshman, Crawford averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. The Bears finished the year 29-8 claiming the NJCAA Division II title.
Schmidt said Crawford is one of the most athletic players he has ever coached.
"Domonique is a versatile and skilled player who has the ability to play a number of positions," Schmidt said. "He is explosive and will provide many highlights for the Youngstown State fans. Domonique has an abundance of potential to continue to develop - his best basketball is still in front of him."
As a high school standout at River Rouge, Crawford averaged 17.8 points per game as a senior while being named sixth-team Class B all-state.
Crawford is one of five Mott men's basketball student-athletes who have signed with Division I schools. Crawford will be the third new member of the Youngstown State program come next season. In November, Mike Adams, a 6-foot-10 center and Colin LaForme, a 6-foot-9 forward signed letters to join the Penguins next fall.
