Youngstown – Youngstown State Head Basketball Coach Jerry Slocum announced the signing of junior college guard Keston Roberts to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Roberts, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., becomes the first student-athlete to sign with the Penguins men's basketball program since Slocum took over in April.
“We are very excited about having Keston be a part of our program," Slocum said. "He is a quality young man who has great basketball ability. His offensive skills are very special and we look for him to become a key part of our program."
Roberts, who is 6-4, 200 pounds, played at Connors State College in Warner, Okla., during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons for Coach Bill Muse. For the Cowboys he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds a game as a sophomore. He did not play basketball last season after returning to Brooklyn to help take care of his family.
Roberts said he is anxious to return to the court and help change the Youngstown State men's basketball program's fortunes.
"I thought Youngstown was a good fit for me," Roberts said. "I hope I can come in and make an impact right away. I really felt comfortable with the coaching staff and they told me it was pretty much a new program. They are trying to make it a winning program and that was a good selling point for me."
Prior to playing at Connors State, Roberts spent a year at Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham, N.C. At Mount Zion, he averaged 12 points and six rebounds in the 2001-02 campaign for Coach Antonio Fozard.
In Brooklyn, he played for Erasmus Hall High School averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior for Coach Vic Butler.
Roberts joins Poland guard Chad Fender as the Penguins' two signees for the upcoming 2005-06 campaign.
