Coach Slocum Inks Contract Extension Through 2011-12

Youngstown -- Youngstown State Head Men's Basketball Coach Jerry Slocum signed a new five-year contract through the 2011-12 season, the university and athletic department announced.

One of just 12 active NCAA coaches with 600-plus career victories, Slocum concluded his second season in 2006-07 guiding the program to a seven-win improvement from his first campaign. The 14 wins during the 2006-07 ledger were the fourth most by the program since 1984-85 and were the most since 2000-01.

In Horizon League play, the Guins tied for fourth place and posted seven conference victories. Those totals rank as highs since YSU joined the HL in 2001-02.
In 2006-07, the Penguins played a school-record 31 contests, won a postseason conference tournament game for the first time since 2003-04 and played host to a postseason tilt for the first time since 1995. At home, the Guins won 10 games, including posting wins over NCAA qualifiers Wright State and Eastern Kentucky.

He picked up his 600th career win on Feb. 22, in the Guins' victory over Wright State at the Beeghly Center.
In his short stint with the program, he has had a two-time first-team all-league selection in Quin Humphrey, the first time since the Guins joined the Division I ranks that the same individual has earned consecutive first-team all-league accolades.

Slocum has a career record of 601-363 through 32 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including 21 with Youngstown State. Prior to being hired at YSU in April 2005 he had spent the previous nine seasons at Gannon. He has also served as a head coach for Geneva College and Nyack College.
He is one of just 47 coaches all-time to record at least 600 wins in a career.



Slocum's YSU Highlights

• Quin Humphrey was a two-time first-team All-Horizon League performer (first time in school history a player has earned first team all-conference honors twice).

• School-best seven Horizon League wins and fourth-place finish in 2006-07.

• School's biggest win over Division I opponent since January 1998 (25 vs. UW-Green Bay (95-70) on Jan. 5, 2006.

• School's biggest margin of victory on the road since (20 points 78-58 at James Madison since February 1999.

• In 2005-06, Guins set a school record for 3-point attempts while ranking second in YSU history in 3-pointers made.

• In 2006-07, YSU played a school-record 30 games,

• Earned 600th career victory on Feb. 22, 2007 with victory over Wright State.

• Won at Kent State (62-58 on Dec. 22, 2006) for the first time since 1956.

• In 2005-06, YSU had the top statistical league leaders in scoring, rebounding and assists.

• In 2006-07, Humphrey led the HL in points per game average and points scored in conference play.

• In his two years, YSU has had seven individual game 30-point performances. Prior to the recent run, the Guins had seven in the previous 15 years.

• Won a conference tournament game for the first time since 2003 by beating Detroit at the Beeghly Center in February.

• In 2006-07, earned YSU's first-ever regular-season sweep of Milwaukee while earning the program's first-ever win over UIC.

• The 14 wins were the most since 2000-01 and fourth-most by the program since 1984-85.
