Student-Athletes Maintain Record-Setting Pace in Classroom
A Youngstown State athletics record 63 percent of student-athletes posted a grade-point average above 3.00 in the 2015 spring semester, the department announced on Monday.

It marks another record-setting performance by Penguins student-athletes in the classroom. Of the 329 student-athletes on 16 athletic programs, 206 posted a GPA of 3.00 or higher in the spring. Of that group, 45 had a 4.00 GPA, including 17 that have maintained a perfect cumulative GPA during their YSU academic tenure. In the fall, YSU had a school-record 57 student-athletes post perfect GPAs.

Upon completion of the spring semester in May, YSU's student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.10. That mark ranks second in school history behind the 3.17 GPA that Penguins' student-athletes had following the 2014 spring semester. A group of 183 student-athletes now maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (56 percent).

The women's tennis team led the way with an outstanding 3.70 semester GPA while the women's golf program was an impressive second at 3.62. Both programs had success outside of the classroom as well as each won a Horizon League title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.

Ten sports had at least a 3.29 GPA and 13 of the 16 programs were above a 3.05 GPA. The men's tennis team had a 3.60 GPA, the highest for all men's programs. The soccer program had a high of eight student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA during the term.

The football program had a solid performance under first-year Head Coach Bo Pelini. The Penguins had a football program high 44 student-athletes with a GPA above 3.00 in the spring. As a group they had a 2.75 GPA, matching their highest since the spring of 2011.

The Penguins have now maintained a cumulative GPA of above 3.00 since the 2012 spring semester, a total of six semesters. Since the spring semester of 2010, YSU student-athletes have been above a 3.00 cumulative in all but one term (fall 2011).
