Volleyball Drops a Pair at Flyer Classic
The Youngstown State volleyball team ran into two high-powered offenses on Saturday and dropped a pair of matches at the Dayton Flyer Classic.

The Penguins lost their opener to the host Flyers 25-13, 25-18, 25-18, as Dayton hit .372 as a team. Lori Vanbeek led the Penguins with 10 kills, and Sarah Varcolla posted four blocks. Dayton got 10 kills from Jessica Sloan, and the Flyers notched 43 kills in the sweep.

Varcolla was the top Penguins attacker against the Lions with nine kills in just 15 attempts. Vanbeek was held to six kills, but she recorded a match-best four blocks. LMU countered with a .376 attack percentage on a balanced attack where five different players had at least five kills. LMU won 25-12, 25-14, 25-22.

YSU led for a good part of the third set and held a 14-11 advantage after a Sam Brown kill. Loyola Marymount went on a 6-1 run to go up 17-15 and did not trail again. YSU was within one at 22-21 on a Varcolla kill before LMU closed out the set. Varcolla had seven kills on nine attempts in the third set alone.

Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play next weekend with two matches at Beeghly Center. The Penguins will host Oakland on Saturday at 4 p.m., and they'll welcome Cleveland State on Sunday at 4 p.m.
